Academy Awards Racism Controversy

Remembering David Bowie

Remembering David Bowie

Bowie

“Look up here, I’m in heaven,

I’ve got scars that can’t be seen,

I’ve got drama, can’t be stolen,

Everybody knows me now.”

The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars

This is Major Tom to Ground Control

I’m stepping through the door

And I’m floating in the most peculiar way

And the stars look very different today

In memory of Aslam Azhar

I share my Op Ed on late Aslam Azhar published at Urdu Times in its various North American and European cities.

It is in Urdu and I have penned it as a duty of a writer to share about a great Pakistani who has undoubtedly indebted the nation with his contributions as well as sacrifices in upholding values, culture, justice, and rights, as well as enriching Pakistan through his work in establishing Television there.

Those who may not read Urdu may read some articles on him by googling.

Continue reading

Racism not acceptable in Canada.

My Op-Ed published in Urdu Times, a major Urdu weekly of US and Canada, discusses systemic, inherent, overt, and covert racism against its First Nations, Black, and other minorities in Canada, my country that is considered to be among the most civilized in the world.
Despite its high global ranking in social justice and inclusion, Canada continues to carry the stigma of blatant racism, especially against the First Nations. Many have the perception that the country is established on the lands of the First Nations who have been systematically deprived of the benefits of its resources, under one sided treaties, and through other abuses.

They have been compelled to live in segregated areas which are called “reserves’, and racist term in itself. The percentage of First Nations in Canada’s federal prison is disproportionally large than their population in Canada

It quotes Former Supreme Court of Canada justice Frank Iacobucci, who wrote “a stinging report on “racism” in the justice system toward aboriginals.”

Justice Iacobucci also said that, “his work surrounding the residential school settlement and probing a lack of aboriginal representation on juries are two issues that have perhaps meant the most to him as a Canadian.”

He also said that “We can’t continue to treat First Nations as objects. We have to be partners. I don’t care if it is in the justice system or economic development. It is going to take time.”

The Op-Ed discusses the recent article of MacLean’s magazine that has exposed serious racism against the aboriginals in Winnipeg, and all Prairie Provinces. The article detailed the death of Tina Fontaine, a 15 year old daughter of the First Nations, who was brutally and sexually assaulted and murdered.

I also discuss the racism against black, specially the policy of Carding practiced by the Toronto police, which has faced serious criticism and is being abolished. It points out the large number of hate crimes against this minority. It also mentions the death of black youths in various police encounters.

The Op-Ed also highlights the insensitivity of Canada’s Muslims and Pakistani towards the plight of the First Nations and black minorities. It suggests that these groups are used to stereotyping the others and have carried the same mentality in Canada.

I bring attention to the fact that most of the Pakistani and Muslim writers living in Canada ignore these issue, and some even use the stereotypes against the blacks in their own writing for vulgar entertainment.

It also discusses two exceptional writers, Nasim Syed, and Khalid Sohail, and Jawaid danish who have used their writings to introduce the Native and black culture and writings, so that their readers may be acquainted with the traditions of these important minorities of Canada. It is only when knows the traditions of others, one can overcome the prejudices.

Nasim Syed has already published a collection of her Urdu translation of the poetry of First Nations, and is currently working on the poetry of aboriginal women poets.

Dr. Khalid Sohail and Jawaid Danish, have compiled their own and other works on the Black people around the world under the title, Kalay JismoN ki Raizat.
The Op-Ed urges the readers to stand united in saying no to racism against all minorities in Canada.

Don’t Keep Yelling ‘Islamophobia’ To Silence Genuine Debate

My article at Huffington Post

Don’t Keep Yelling ‘Islamophobia’ To Silence Genuine Debate

On the day when Canada and its Prime Minister were getting ready to confer an honorary citizenship on Nobel Laureate Malala Yusufzai, and when Stephen Harper was going to moderate “Strong Girls, Strong World” session with Malala as a participant, the very foundation of Canada’s democracy and freedoms came under attack.

On that day, Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, son of a Libyan immigrant, who had only recently embraced Islam committed an act of jihadist terror, killing unarmed Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, who was standing in guard at the National War Memorial. He then stormed the parliament and was killed in a shootout. There are strong suggestions that Zehaf-Bibeau was influenced by the Jihadist ideology that may have become even more potent by addiction to drugs and other factors.

Just a few days earlier another recent convert to Islam, Martin Ahmad Rouleau killed Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent, and injured another soldier. He was known to Canada’s anti-terrorism agencies and his passport was seized under suspicion that he has Jihadi connection and may travel abroad to take part in activities related to ISIS.

Both these terror attacks took place after, “ISIS” had urged supporters to carry out attacks against Western countries, including Canada.

While these incidents resulted in deep grief and anguish for all Canadians, various Muslim leaders raised alarms that any association of these terrorists with Muslims will give rise to Islampohobia.

AQ Mufti, former leader of Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) tried to highlight, at a Facebook discussion had the audacity to write that, “Michael Zehaf-Bibeau has committed a heinous crime, against our motherland, and he has got his punishment.”

As if the death of a terrorist during a shootout, completes the investigative and judicial process, without finding out who else has been involved, and what other risks are there that need to be explored.

At a CBC program, lawyer Faisal Kutty suggested that glorification of violence, in the society, was one of the causes of the terrorist violence. His focus was on Islamophobia.

It seems that the Muslim leaders have not learnt any lessons from the acts or conspiracies of violence committed by Canadian Muslims within and without Canada. The have forgotten that Toronto 18 was a reality.

In a recently published book, Religious-Radicalization-and-Securitization-in-Canada-and-Beyond. Lorne Dawson, under the chapter, ‘Trying to Make Sense of Home-Grown Terrorist Radicalization: The Case of Toronto 18‘, writes:

“Long after the sensational news broke, many Canadians remained skeptical that there was a serious threat from home-grown terrorists…..Canadians were inclined to dismiss the group as ‘a bunch of bravado-filled but bumbling incompetents who were not capable of carrying out their plans…. slowly but surely, however, as the remaining 11 either pleaded guilty or were convicted, and as the findings of the court cases, in particular the “Agreed Statements of Fact”, became public, the reason for doubt dwindled. It became clear that a catastrophe was narrowly averted.”

In Call for Transnational Jihad, Lashkar-e-Taiba 1985-2014, Arif Jamal, established a connection between one youth who was convicted from among the Toronto 18, and Aabid Khan of a U.S. terrorist cell.

Since then, several young Canadian Muslim men have been arrested and convicted on terrorism charges, and some have died abroad committing terrorism. After Ottawa incident, Imam Yusuf Badat of Islamic Foundation of Toronto acknowledged at CBC that even Canadian Muslim girls are now getting involved in acts of possible terrorism abroad in Syria.

Contrary to what Muslim pundits keep pushing, Canada is not indulging in Islamophobia, but it justifiably reacts to real acts and threats of terrorism by Muslim Canadians.

The Canadian spirit of inclusiveness is evident everywhere. That hijab-clad Muslim women work safely from Tim Hortons to public and private offices without any fear of intimidation and harassment, is itself proof that the leadership of Islamic organizations is the one spreading false fears in an effort to trivialize the enormity of the jihadist challenge.

It is Jihadi rhetoric and conspiracy theories that poison the minds of Muslims.

The U.K. Telegraph reports:

“[T]hat Britain’s most high-profile radical Islamist preacher, Anjem Choudary, had influenced those involved in the Ottawa and Quebec attacks”.

Such rhetoric and conspiracy theories can also be found at the videos of North America Muslim Foundation (NAMF)’s TV program The Free Radicals, in Canada. In an episode titled Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan’s Letter to Malala Yousafzai, Imam Sheheryar Shaikh and other participants suggest that, the shooting of Malala was a western conspiracy, that Taliban are losing a PR war, and that their struggle is against Imperialism, and for liberating their land from the foreigners.

At a recent seminar, “Caliphate as a Political System? Myth or Reality” Imam Shaikh asserted that the Islamic Caliphate is a divine promise, and will materialize. Only a few weeks ago the same Imam and Farooq Khan the president of NAMF at a TV program hosted by Rawal TV, suggested that the beheading of western men by ISIS may also be a conspiracy, since one cannot determine as to who the masked executioners are?

These conspiracy theories and Jihadi rhetoric have so clouded the Muslim mindset in Canada that they rarely come out to denounce Muslim terrorism with a united voice. And if they do, they refrain from renouncing the doctrine of armed Jihad.

We Muslims should realize that if we need to save Canada from threats of terrorism, then we should shun the ruse of Islamophobia, and Jihadi conspiracy theories. We are living in Canada as a pampered minority, where the society accepts all our demands of exclusion, meets our request of providing prayers areas in private and public spaces, and lets us pull our children out of many secular programs. If we fail to reciprocate and keep yelling ‘Islamophobia’ to silence genuine debate, then the host society has an absolute right to act in revulsion towards us.

Synopsis of my Op-Ed published at Urdu Times, USA and Canada on ISIS/Daaish

The Op-Ed challenges the feigned surprise of US and Western nations on the rise of ISIS and its barbarity in Iraq and Syria.

It argues that ISIS is the direct result of nurturing of Islamists by the US and the West to annihilate the former Soviet Union. ISIS is the continuum of the same strain that originated in the creation of Mujahedeen, Taliban, and AL Qaeda.

After the first and second Iraq wars the Shia dominated governments, that came to power supported by the US, after hundreds of years of dormancy, let loose extreme abuse and brutality against the Sunni minorities, and forced their armed elements to join hands with similar groups in Syria. These groups were also supported by the US, Saudi, and other Sunni factors, who were serving their strategic interests of curtailing the influence of Shia Iran and Syria.

It is this bloody sectarian rivalry that was willfully ignored by the US and the West that has now been let loose in its most brutal form.

The Op-Ed asks that the ISIS and its causes be understood and that at the same time be opposed and condemned by all moderate, progressive, and liberal Muslims.

The article also takes to task a writer of a popular Canadian newspaper who has insinuated that moderate Muslims in Canada are ignoring ISIS while focussing their efforts on other liberal and progressive causes. It reminds the writer, that liberal, progressives, and enlightened Muslim activists and organizations in Canada have struggled for years to promote separation of religion and state. That they have consistently asked the Canadian power establishments to empower such groups in their efforts to spread moderation and secular ideas within the Muslim community. It laments that instead of supporting Muslim liberals, Canadian politicians of all parties patronize places of worships to seek votes and in doing so encourage the extremist religionists even if unwillingly and naively.

It also exposes those Muslim intellectuals who while opposing Islamic extremism and terror, find faults within the fundamentals of Islam, annoying ordinary Muslims, and creating difficulties for those liberal progressive Muslims who profess separation of religion and state. These liberal progressive Muslim are then considered Islampohobes who are out to harm the religion. The article gives the example of Salim Mansur who ironically contributes to the populist conservative SUN newspaper in Canada. He is considered among those who with their personal bias and intellectual arrogance, tend to find faults in Islam instead of false interpretations of Islam by the Islamic extremist terrorists. Quoting his example, ordinary Muslims shun all Muslim liberals and progressives as Islamophobes.

Modi and Indian Democracy

—————————

Modi and Future of Indian Democracy

For writers of Pakistani-Muslim origin to write on politics, democracy, or personalities of India, requires to cross various minefields. If they praise the Indian democracy and values, they are taunted by their compatriots, are many a times targeted by agencies of the Pakistani establishment, and their loyalty to Pakistan is suspected.  If they criticize the Indian political or social systems, then they face the ire of their Indian friends, and are also watched by Indian spy agencies.

Despite these difficulties, the students of global democracy attempt to objectively study Indian issues. Certain facts should be noted about India. It is the world’s largest democracy; where more than 800 million citizens cast their votes in recent elections. These elections spanned over several weeks, and there were literally no accusations of rigging or violence during this exercise. The fundamental reason of this is that the founding fathers of India dreamed of a system in which neither feudal, princes, tribal leaders, nor military officers would be able to control the citizens. They envisioned a society where people could live in peaceful coexistence without any differences of caste, creed, or religion. With a regular democratic process, they trained their people in the fundamentals of democracy and prepared them to hold politicians accountable to the people.

The names of Baba Sahib Ambedkar, and Rajendra Prasad are etched in history as visionaries who determined the identity of the Indian constitution. The preamble of the constitution determines that India will be   a Sovereign, Secular, Socialist, Democratic Republic, and the Indian system will be based on:social, economic and political justice; liberty of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship; equality of status and of opportunity; and to promote fraternity among all citizens assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the nation. It is important to note that despite the freedom of faith and worship, the words Secular and Socialist were added to the preamble in 1976 through the 42nd amendment, among several other changes. A secular political system is recognised as the separation of religion and state throughout the world. A very clear example of this is the system in the US where the president can neither establish a religion nor can restrict the practice of any religion.

The Indian people disagree on many political principles in the same way as people in any mature democracy. Political parties here struggle to win the right to govern on democratic principles. For many years after the independence of India, the Congress party ruled the country, and considered that leadership is its entitlement. This attitude promoted corruption, nepotism, and bad governance.  With the maturity of democracy and political training of the people of India, the Congress party began losing its grip and other parties began posing serious challenges to its monopoly. As a result, for the last two decades, India saw minority governments led by the Congress party as well as the BJP. The BJP and its allies which declare themselves as Hindu Nationalists, became the formidable opponents of the Congress party, and formed two minority governments in 1998 and 2004.

After many years of persistent political struggle, the BJP has achieved the singular majority in the most recent Indian election. With its own majority, and with the support of its allies, BJP can now rule India for many years. It should also be noted that though the BJP has obtained 282 seats in the Indian parliament, it could obtain only 31 % of the popular vote. As a comparison when the Congress party won a similar number of seats in 1967, its share of popular vote was about 41 %. This fact indicates that though the BJP has succeeded due to a desire for change in Indian politics, the Indian vote has been extremely splintered in the recent elections.

It is commonly known that the leader of the BJP and the new Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi professes to be a Hindu Nationalist. He considers secularism as foreign import, and calls Nehru, who was among the respected founders of India, a pseudo-secular. It should also be noted that Hindu Nationalism really means Hindu religious extremism. Any other explanation of Hindu Nationalism is meaningless and misguided.

With the growth of religious fundamentalism in the world, led by Islamic extremists, and Christian Evangelists, there has been a simultaneous rise in the Hindu religious extremism, and the hardening of attitudes in its adherents. Due to Pakistan’s infiltration in Kashmir and its alleged role in terrorism in India, the Hindu extremist has also become aggressive.  This led to the Gujrat riots during the tenure of Modi as the chief minister of the state. Several thousand Muslims were murdered and mayhem took place during those troubled times. Though the courts have cleared Modi of any criminal wrong doing, many in the word hold him morally responsible for those heinous crimes. He has been denied visas to the US and the UK under this cloud of doubt.

We should also try to look at the allies of Modi and his BJP. Sang Parivar is an alliance of Hindu Nationalist organizations to which the BJP belongs, and it includes various extremist Hindu organizations like the RSS, Shiv Sena, and the Bajrang Dal. The BJP itself is an incarnation of Maha Sabha, another extremist Hindu organization. It is parties like Shiv Sena, the RSS, and Maha Sabha that accuse leaders like Nehru and Gandhi to be soft on Indian Muslims and to be involved in appeasing Muslims. It was the ideology and influence of the RSS and Maha Sabha under which, Nathuram Godse murdered Mahatma Gandhi. The RSS is a private paramilitary Hindu nationalist organization that has also trained Modi in his youth.

Shiv Sena is also a very extremist Hindu religious organization that has been accused of terrorism in the past. It has also been directly linked to the infamous violent riots in Bhiwandi and Mumbai, and accused of attacking and terrorizing media. It was under the threats of Shiv Sena, that M F Hussain, the iconic Indian artist had to leave India and died in exile. Shiv Sena is an important ally, and exerts considerable influence on the BJP and Modi. Their Hindu nationalist allies have inherent enmity against Pakistan and also carry parochial attitudes towards Indian Muslims.  These are the reasons that many Indian Muslims and secular people around the world suspect that Modi’s allies may pressurize Modi to work against the Muslims and other minorities in India; and that in any future communal violence, Modi may display a similar attitude to that which he adopted during Gujrat riots.

It is the secular nature of the Indian constitution that provides protection to all minorities. Several of Modi’s allies have tried to redefine the secular principles of the constitution in the past and may attempt it again. They also plan to make various amendments to the constitution and may succeed at their will, based on their majority in the parliament.

Modi has tried to reassure Muslims and other minorities, as a result of which some well-known Muslims have recently joined the BJP. Indian journalist and scholar M J Akbar is one of those converts. It is ironic that M J Akbar penned the authoritative biography of Nehru, and Modi calls Nehru a pseudo-secular. Due to this irony the conversion of M J Akbar appears to be whimsical at best.

The current reality in India is that the BJP and Modi have obtained a majority in the parliament on the basis of only 31 % of the popular vote, due the wave of change against Congress’s bad governance, and on the promises of economic progress and well-being of India and its people.

The world expects and demands of them that they focus on the development and prosperity of India and its citizens, and avoid any controversial action that may harm the fundamental principles of the world’s largest democracy. The respect of Indian democracy is based on its secular identity, and any attempt to change this identity will severely harm both Indian values, and democracy itself.

My latest Op-Ed published in Urdu Times, USA, UK, Canada on April 23, 2014 , in Urdu language can be read at the PDF file by clicking the link below, and an English synopsis is also shared as follows:

Azaadi e Sahafat

Synopsis:

The Op-Ed is in the context of recent murderous attack on Pakistani Journalist Hamid Mir and the accusations that Pakistan’s supreme intelligence agency, the ISI may have been involved in this attack. It condemns the attack and offers sympathy to Hamid Mir.

In this Op-Ed I share reference to various covenants and charters and constitutions sanctifying the Freedom of Speech and Expression around the world. These include the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the US constitution, and also the constitution of Pakistan.

I present the argument that Freedom of Speech and Press in Pakistan severely restricted by the very wordings of the article 19 of the constitution.  It is these restrictions that have never allowed the true freedom of speech in Pakistan.

I also refer to the books by the esteemed late journalist Zamir Niazi who documented in details the methods of controlling the Press in Pakistan. It is proposed that there have been some nominal positive changes in this regards since those books were written.

It is argued that most of the Urdu journalists and media persons have not shown the responsibility that the right of freedom of expression also demands. They indulge in shouting matches at TV programs and declare any one disagreeing with them as traitors.

It is suggested that Pakistan is among the most dangerous countries where scores of journalists are killed each years. It quotes Ali Dayal Hasan, who has recently written, “We, especially we who challenge murderers and torturers, are only alive at their discretion.”

The Op-Ed also criticises Hamid Mir, who in his Urdu columns at Jang has adopted language and opinions bad mouthing secular writers and writers in English, and insinuated that criticising Jinnah and Iqbal is subversion and treachery. His harsh criticisms of Pakistan’s liberal intellectuals is too obvious in his opinions.. He attempts to show the distinguished poet Josh Malih Abadi as a stooge of India. It also asks the readers to review various Urdu columns by Hamid Mir and determine if he also propagates a right wing agenda that has so harmed Pakistan. It is suggested that it is the language and opinions like these that have emboldened the extremists who can deem any one as an enemy of Islam and Pakistan, and a traitor who could be killed with impunity.

I suggest that Hamid Mir’s employers have always adopted hypocritical opportunism in extracting favors and privileges from the source of power in Pakistan that allows them to pay huge salaries to their staff like Hamid Mir. I also opine that it is unfortunate but journalists like Hamid Mir and the institutions like Jang and Geo are now tasting their own medicine.

The Op-Ed hopes that after this murderous attack, Hamid Mir would join forces with the Pakistani human rights activists,  and brave intellectuals who have opposed extremism and military with sincerity, and carry a true struggle for Freedom of Expression in Pakistan. Otherwise he would still be considered a pawn in the chess game of power players.

“Mubaiyanna Mulzim” Pervez Musharraf Haazir Ho—

Mubaiyanna Mulzim

Synopsis.

The Op-Ed discusses the fundamental clauses of the constitution of Pakistan that require each Pakistani citizen, and any person living in the territory of Pakistan to obey the Constitution of Pakistan.

These clauses declare that any attempts to abrogate, suspend, mutilate, or illegal amend the constitution, by force, show of force, or any other means is high treason.

Any person or person supporting or adding one in the above acts also commits high treason. The punishment of high treason will be determined by the parliament of Pakistan. The clauses also deem that no court will provide legal cover to any such changes or attempts to change.

It shares the history where in the past  various army generals including Iskander Mirza, Ayub Khan, Yahya Khan, Zia ul Haq, and Pervez Musharraf abrogated or mutilated the constitution through illegal means.

All the former generals except Pervez Musharraf have died. Zia ul Haq was killed in a plane crash.

Among the dead generals Iskander Mirza died in exile, and  Ayub Khan and Yahya Khan spent their lives under house arrest, They lived a life of ignominy and all of their supporters and admires left them by themselves. Pakistan army did not support them after their removal from power.

Pakistan Supreme court has declared that Musharraf has committed High Treason and directed the government to apply appropriate laws in his case.

Musharraf has been trying to avoid the indictment under various excuses. He is supported by those lawyers, who always supported the dictators in providing then the legal cover under previous pliant courts.

It is stated that Pakistan Army establishment advised Musharraf to remain outside Pakistan  and not to enter Pakistan’s politics. Musharraf did not follow its advice and apparently the Army is not providing him the support he expected.

He has already been compelled to appear before various civilian courts, and will have to ultimately face indictment  for high treason. If tried he will be punished, and may probably be pardoned. That is what the army would also probably would like to see to close this matter. Pakistan Army is an institution that shoes aggression at times that suit it, and retreats when necessary. That is what it would do in this case also.

Musharraf’ lawyers are demanding that those who advised Musharraf in trashing the constitution should also be tried. Musharraf has the right to summon them as his witnesses, however it is unlikely that they will stand in his defense. It is highly likely that some such person may choose to become approves, or state witnesses to save their own skin. The state has the right to determine its priorities and has the privilege to try the main culprit, since all others including those who have died, will be indirectly proven guilty when Musharraf is tried and found guilty

Ashaab e Tabl o Alam aur Kitab aur Qalam

It discusses the pathetic state of education in Pakistan and discovers that education has been declared a Human Right, and was made compulsory, only recently after 63 years of establishment of Pakistan.

It also advises that due to huge gap between the rich and privilege, modern education is essentially available to citizens in urban areas and children of feudals, army officers, and the privileged few.

It informs that Pakistan only spends about 2.4 percent of its GNP on education, and that huge resources are committed to Pakistan’s military infrastructure.

It questions as to why Pakistan’s media, intelligentsia, writers, and activists do not raise their united voice to change this situation.
